The B.S. in Engineering Technology with a focus on Applied Systems Technology is designed for innovative students who are applications-oriented. The program builds on a background in applied science and mathematics. There is a strong emphasis on integrating theory and applications for mechanical systems, computer-aided modeling, manufacturing and production processes, rapid prototyping, automation, quality assurance and development of automated/robotics systems.
The program’s mission is to prepare graduates with the technical and managerial skills necessary to enter careers in process and systems design, technical sales, manufacturing operations and maintenance functions of a manufacturing enterprise.
The on-campus B.S. in Engineering Technology program with a concentration in Applied Systems Technology is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the General Criteria.
The B.S. in Engineering Technology requires 125 total hours. For more information on the eight semester plan for Engineering Technology – Applied Systems Technology view the plan or visit the WCU course catalog.
Transfer Information: Transfer as seamlessly as possible from a community college to one of the College of Engineering and Technology’s programs.
As part of the College of Engineering and Technology's focus on project-based learning, ET students are required to participate in a two-semester senior capstone project. Working under the guidance of faculty and mentors, teams of two-to-four seniors tackle complex challenges proposed by project sponsors. The teams use a stage/gate process to set specific goals, deadlines and deliverables that culminate in fully tested products, concepts or new knowledge that project sponsors can use for practical purposes or develop further.
With a degree in engineering technology, students will be prepared to enter a career in:
As an ABET-accredited program, WCU's Engineering Technology curriculum sets out to meet specific learning objectives and prepare each student with particular knowledge and analytic skills to ensure their success in the industry:
ABET definition: Program Educational Objectives are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve.
Graduates of the Engineering Technology Program will:
ABET Definition: Student Outcomes are statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to apply by the time of graduation.
For baccalaureate degree programs, these student outcomes must include, but are not limited to, the following:
(1) an ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline;
(2) an ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline;
(3) an ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in broadly-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature;
(4) an ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes; and
(5) an ability to function effectively as a member as well as a leader on technical teams.
